Tonight: Corinth (2-0) at Tishomingo Co. (2-0), 7 p.m.
For the first time in seven years, Highway 72 rivals Corinth (a 3A school) and Tishomingo County (4A) are squaring off. It’s nice to see the rivalry renewed, but even more fun is the tailback faceoff.
Each team has a stud running back: Corinth’s Hubert Crawford and Tishomingo’s Tyler Pritchard, both juniors.
First, Crawford. He’s gained 350 yards (10 yards a pop) and scored four touchdowns. He racked up 260 and all four TDs last week against New Albany.
“I knew I could do something like that,” Crawford said, “but I didn’t think it was going to happen.”
“We knew he had the potential to do these things,” Corinth coach Jimmy Mitchell said, “and it was just a matter of making it all fit.”
Now, Pritchard. He was a Daily Journal All-Area second-teamer last season. He’s got good speed, and he possesses what I recently termed “gyroscopic” ankles. He’s rushed for 244 yards (11.1 per carry) and three scores.
He’s even scarier when you consider the big offensive line opening holes for him.
“They’re a lot bigger than us,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to try to do something to counteract the difference in size, and also try to hem Tyler Pritchard up.”
Tishomingo coach Steve Carter has to deal with the other side of that coin: Corinth’s team speed.
“I hope we can slow them down some,” he said.
Not too much, I hope. The fans want to see these guys get loose.

I’m looking over my Players of the Week nominations, and there are four of them. Not a bad number. One problem: They’re all girls.
This is almost a weekly problem. I’ll get either all boys or all girls nominees. As I’m sure you know, we have both a male and female Player of the Week, and I’ve often had to pore over box scores and nominate someone myself. The lack of participation is sometimes disheartening.
I attribute that to the feature’s relative newness; it was revived, after a long absence, only last fall. My hope is that all coaches will come to see it as a nice honor for the kids, and that taking a few minutes to fax in some stats is worth the time and effort.
Here is how you coaches can nominate someone – and you must do so by noon each Tuesday: Fax (842-2233) or e-mail (brad.locke@djournal.com) the nomination, which should include stats from the previous week (Monday-Saturday) along with season-to-date stats. Don’t forget to include your contact number.
One thing I don’t like about the feature is how the stats are quite a few days old by the time the selected players appear in the Friday high school page. Would be nice if we could run them early in the week, but with me usually off Sundays – and I covet that day of rest – it’s logistically impossible.
Anyway, one thing I’ll start doing is posting on my blog the stats of those players who were nominated but not selected. Because they deserve some recognition, too. Perhaps that will help establish the Players of the Week feature.
Now please, if you’re reading this before noon today, send me a boy nomination!

Be honest. How many of you saw that Vardaman upset of Bruce coming Thursday night? Well, whether or not you did, I'd like to hear your predictions on tonight's games. Any game, pick a game, let me know what you think.
You can find my predictions on select games in today's Daily Journal. Check out our high school page, and if you dare, check out the NEMiss Scouting Report below.
We'll be at several games. So happens I'll be in Booneville again for the Blue Devils' game against Nettleton. We'll also have writers at Grenada-Tupelo, Meridian-Starkville, Shannon-Lafayette, Aberdeen-Pontotoc and Mooreville-Mantachie. Call in those scores, people! We thank you for your help.
